Method

How the lookup works

  1. Estimate the network region

    Your public IP can suggest a city or region without asking for browser geolocation or device GPS.

  2. Match current area-code records

    We match that place to supported North American Numbering Plan records and show the source freshness with the result.

  3. Keep overlay codes equal

    When several area codes serve the same place, every supported in-service code is shown at equal weight instead of inventing a single “best” code.

This is a city-level network estimate, not a phone-number assignment, street address, or precise location. VPNs, proxies, mobile networks, corporate gateways, and carrier exit points can move the result away from where you are.

We do not request GPS or browser geolocation automatically, and we do not keep a lookup history. When a city-level map is available, OpenStreetMap tiles load automatically for the displayed IP result. You can choose a separate button to center that map on your device; the coordinates stay in your browser and never go to our API. Area code FAQ

Why does this result show multiple area codes?

Many cities use overlay plans, where several area codes serve the same place. We show every supported in-service code instead of guessing one.

Why might the detected city be wrong?

IP location usually reflects your network provider's routing, not your device's exact position. Mobile and corporate networks may exit in another city.

Does a VPN change the result?

Usually. A VPN or proxy can make the lookup reflect the network exit point rather than your physical location.

Does this site use GPS?

Not automatically. The initial result uses the public IP address of the current connection. A visible “Use precise location” button can request browser permission only when you choose it, and only re-centers the map locally.

Can an IP address identify a phone number's actual area code?

No. An IP address can suggest area codes used near an approximate network location, but it cannot reveal or verify a person's telephone area code.
